• The Walking Dead Season 2 DVD Box Set

  After forty or so minutes of wallowing and soul bearing, the movie moves out of narrative stall with Nick deciding to hold a yard sale once upon a time life dvd of all his possessions and start over, but by then it’s all over. Almost. The only thing that stops this whole sorry tale from completely falling on its sad-sack face is Will Ferrell. He is always watchable and like his fellow comedy stars Bill Murray and Jim Carrey before him, he shows that there’s some serious dramatic chops beneath The Funny. It’s a damn shame that the movie doesn’t take a leaf out of Ferrell’s book and wrong foot us some Timmy Time DVD way but instead Rush just dishes us nothing but a stand issue IndieWood movie –  A heart-aching dramatic premise spiked with Quirkiness: Check!  A Plinky Plonky Alt Country soundtrack: Check! A motley assortment of oddball and damaged supporting characters played by recognisable Hollywood character actors: (namely Michael Peña, Rebecca Hall, Laura Dern and the ever-entertaining Stephen Root) Check!

  Though I really enjoyed Ferrell’s The Walking Dead Season 2 DVD Box Set likable and deceptively nuanced performance, I left feeling bludgeoned by a movie over-earnest in emotion, artless in its cliches and feeling more depressed than impressed.

• The Defenders Season 1 DVD Box Set

  Transformers: Dark of the Moon’s Moment of Glory
  Star Trek! Raiders of The Lost Ark! Mission: Impossible! All these blockbusters and many more have come out of Paramount Friends – The Complete Series Collection Studios but it’s surprising to learn that the highest grossing movie of the studios history and the fourth highest of all time, after Fox’s Avatar & Titanic and Warner Bros’ Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2, was Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Say whatever you want about the movie’s script (crude), its acting performances (as robotic as the Transformers themselves) or Michael Bay’s style The Office (US) Season 8 of filmmaking (high octane, abrasive and cocksure direction that chooses to bludgeon rather than emote)but  one thing that the Transformers fans and haters can agree on is that the visual effects in the movies are stunning.

  The man to thank for that is Oscar winning visual effects legend and ILM pioneer Scott Farrar who’s worked on movies such as Back To The Future, Jurassic Park, Cocoon, Star Trek AND Star Wars. He held court at the Apollo Cinema, Piccadilly last Thursday to reveal the tricks of the trade.
 He spoke about the difficulties that he and his crew faced in bringing to life such revered characters and The Defenders Season 1 DVD Box Set the morphing aspects too. The first Transformers movie only had 12 robots and 460 effects shots and by the sequel they got to the point of having to create and animate an additional 34 robots taking up the effects shot count to 550. 
Having delivered ground-breaking FX work on the first two Transformers films, Farrar and his crew at ILM pushed the envelope in many areas for its third outing, from the complexity of the characters, the number and style of transformations, to the simulations, and then made it all work in 3D.
